Welcome Tabaqueira and Swedish Match to the Swedish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce!

25 February 2026

We are delighted to announce that Tabaqueira together with its sister company Swedish Match has joined the Swedish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce.

Tabaqueira and Swedish Match share a long history of being leading companies in their respective markets. Tabaqueira was founded in 1927 and part of PMI (Philip Morris International) since 1997, and Swedish Match in 1915 and a part of PMI since 2022. Tabaqueira has played a pivotal role in the Portuguese economy and driven innovation in the tobacco sector in a similar fashion as Swedish Match in Sweden.

In 2027, Tabaqueira will celebrate 100 years of contribution to Portugal, marked by a strong export profile: in 2024 alone, the company achieved a record €887 million in exports, including €58 million in high value-added services from PMI’s global service centers in Portugal.

Its Sintra factory is more than a manufacturing hub, it’s a center of excellence for PMI’s Finance and IT services, employing over 1,500 people from 37 nationalities and operating in 20 languages. Tabaqueira hosts PMI’s second-largest IT Hub, a cutting-edge center integrating artificial intelligence, with more than 220 engineers developing technology that supports PMI’s transformation.

Beyond its economic footprint, Tabaqueira contributes to approximately €1.2 billion annually in taxes and has attracted €422 million in direct foreign investment from PMI since privatization.

As part of PMI, Tabaqueira is leading a global transformation toward a smoke-free future. Since 2008, PMI has invested over $14 billion in developing, scientifically substantiating, and commercializing innovative smoke-free products for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke. This transition accelerated PMI’s acquisition of Swedish Match for $16 billion. This commitment is reflected in world-class research and products such as IQOS, VEEV, and ZYN, offering substantially less harmful alternatives to traditional cigarettes founded on the legacy that has emanated from Sweden and Swedish Match.

By joining the Swedish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, Tabaqueira aims to foster partnerships, share best practices, and contribute to dialogue on innovation and sustainability, supporting the Chamber’s mission to strengthen bilateral relations and promote responsible business.

We warmly welcome Tabaqueira and Swedish Match to our community and look forward to their active participation in our network!
